She could take a gap year, as so many students from her native Denmark do. Her parents hadn’t attended a university, so the idea of pursuing non-academic projects was also enticing. But when Emma’s school counselor told her about The American University of Paris, something clicked. </p> <p>As an International Baccalaureate (IB) student, Emma had spent the last two years taking courses with an international outlook. She adored the IB teaching style, the small class sizes, and that, as a student at a United World College boarding school, her school put her in touch with academically competitive students from over 90 countries. Hearing her classmates recount their lives abroad, along with their first-hand accounts of major world events, ignited in her a passion for politics and its effect on people.  </p> <p>Majoring in <a href="/academics/undergraduate/majors/international-comparative-politics">International and 91ý Politics</a> at AUP proved to be the perfect next step. Now on campus, Emma has discovered just how much AUP reflects her IB experience. With Paris as her classroom, Emma divides her time practicing French, studying politics in small classrooms, exploring museums, and walking among historic architecture, which is both evocative of the past and alive with the city’s diverse inhabitants. As her studies take her deeper into Paris, Emma’s passion for politics and people has only grown.  </p> <p>If romanticized ideas of Paris continue to captivate the world’s imagination, Emma has found that studying the Parisian <em>banlieues</em>, the suburbs, reveals a side of France beset with inequality, and demonstrates how politics stand to shape a city and its inhabitants. In her favorite class this semester, a French Topics class with Professor Caroline Laurent, Emma and her classmates examine multimedia materials—film, music, among others—to access nuanced representations of the local and national culture.  </p> <p>Thanks to AUP’s flexibility in course selection and class schedules, Emma also finds time for volunteering and campus engagement. Keen to pursue a career in diplomacy—within the UN, the EU, or an NGO—Emma has gained experience working with various French societies like Les Enfants de la Goutte d’Or, and interacting with young people exiled in France. It’s the personal element, she says, that makes the experience so rewarding. She’s also found AUP’s student club Voices of the Global Majority as the ideal place to discuss politics in an open forum with her peers. Balancing the expansiveness of Paris with the comfort and support of AUP’s small community, she says, has been the perfect way to feel at home in a big city. </p> </div></div></div> </div> <div class="widget-article-plus-text"> <div class="block_article"> <div class="bg" data-img="/sites/default/files/styles/263_305/public/images/widget-text-with-image/image/Screenshot%202025-11-10%20at%2014.52.36_0.png?itok=nmNdpc6D"> </div> <div class="line"></div> </div> <div class="field field-name-field-widget-text-image-editor field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>Perhaps the most surprising part of Emma’s undergraduate experience is that earning her degree will only take three years. Not only did the IB program prepare Emma for university coursework, but thanks to her stellar exam results, Emma joined AUP with an automatic 100% tuition scholarship and one year of course credits under her belt.  </p> <p>The value of scholarships, she says, is enormous. “It brings competitive students to universities who can’t normally go." Thinking back to her boarding school days, where many students relied on financial aid, she sees the difference between a world that learns together and a world that learns in silos. In her view, supporting higher education is even more critical in our current climate. With democracy under threat around the world, combined with the addictive effects of social media algorithms, Emma feels that access to higher education empowers the next generation to see the world, not through a screen, but through the eyes of the people around them.  </p> <p>With diverse, welcoming learning environments like AUP and the scholarships that make that higher education possible, Emma feels confident that we may unite around one table and have conversations about what our shared future can hold.  </p> <p>Learn more about the <a href="/admissions/undergraduate/financial-aid/ib-diploma-scholarships#:~:text=The%20IB%20Advantage&amp;text=IB%20Diploma%20candidates%20receive%2032,score%20of%204%20or%20above." rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">IB advantage at AUP</a>. </p> </div></div></div> </div></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class="field field-name-field-image-listing field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img src="/sites/default/files/images/story/content/image-listing/Screenshot%202025-11-10%20at%2014.52.28_0.png" width="500" height="640" alt="" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-description-listing field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Current student Emma Schmidt Kristensen won a scholarship to attend AUP, thanks to her IB test scores. platform and an e-publication, this trilingual Fashion and Textile Glossary—available in English, French, and Khmer—is an innovative resource that aims to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps in the study of Cambodian fashion and textiles.</p> <p>While a few textile-related glossaries exist within academic literature, these resources remain limited in scope. They are often inaccessible to Cambodian students, researchers, and designers. At the same time, Cambodian textile and fashion history remains underrepresented in scholarly literature, notably in the fields of Cambodian studies and fashion studies.</p> <p>A crucial motivation behind this project lies in Cambodia’s traumatic twentieth-century history. During the 1970s, the civil war and the Khmer Rouge regime had catastrophic effects on artisanal textile production as well as the way people dress, especially for ceremonies and rituals. This decade of political, social, and humanitarian upheaval led to the collapse of fiber production, especially sericulture, and disrupted the transmission of weaving skills. Knowledge about techniques, looms, and equipment, as well as styles and motifs, was severely affected. In the post-conflict period, artisanal textile production gradually resumed, despite not returning to prewar levels. The genocide claimed about two million people between 1975 and 1979, a quarter of the population at the time, which led to a generational gap upending the transmission of specific dress customs.</p> <p>The glossary currently identifies and defines 100 key technical, material, and cultural terms relating to Cambodian textiles and fashion, offering translations and descriptions in English, French, and Khmer. It is the result of extensive research into Cambodian dress and textile heritage. The terms were identified through fieldwork research and conversations with weavers, analysis of extant sources, collaborative work with the translator, and input from Cambodian experts.</p> <p>Though not exhaustive, the selection of terms is intended to be comprehensive, covering various facets of textile and fashion production. The glossary is organized into categories that include fibers and raw materials, dyes, textile techniques, sewing techniques, types of textiles, clothing, and preventative conservation. Some of the etymology of Khmer fashion terminology originates from French, reflecting Cambodia’s colonial past. Other terms connect with a history of technological development with textile machinery, including sewing machines in the twentieth century. The glossary also contributes to the ongoing effort to decolonize fashion studies by redressing marginalized histories and decentralizing knowledge production. In that regard, this project provides a didactic and user-friendly model for other terminology databases on fashion and textiles that include technical vocabulary, practices, objects, and materials.</p> <p>Devised as a shareable resource, the online database invites contributions, updates, and revisions. Each term is equally accessible in all three languages to foster a de-hierarchized approach. We hope that the database can continue to expand via collaborations with Cambodian, French, and Anglophone institutions, and beyond.</p> <p>100 Fashion and Textile Terms in Khmer, English and French © 2025 by Magali An Berthon is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. They are nice spots to have lunch on a cold day, or on those warm summer days, to grab lunch to go and enjoy sushi by the Seine.</p> <p>The Jardin du Palais-Royal in the 1st arrondissement is a must see. Everyone should take a stroll through this hidden seventeenth-century park, which is surrounded by boutiques and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to have a picnic, read a book, or sit and enjoy the beautiful cherry blossom trees there. It’s also near the Comédie française, so if you like French theatre, it’s worth stopping in there to see a play too.</p> <p>Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience, so seize the opportunity and make the most of it. Living and studying abroad, you’ll learn so much both inside and outside the classroom; you’ll meet lifelong friends from all over; you’ll explore new places, discover new cultures, and learn a new language maybe; and most of all, you’ll see that you can do anything you put your mind to.</p> Summer School Coordinator<div class="field field-name-field-image-category field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Image category:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/203">Miscellaneous</a></div></div></div>EmmaDunne<a href="mailto:admissions@aup.edu">admissions@aup.edu</a><img src="/sites/default/files/images/counselor-info/photo/Dunne_E%20%281%29.JPG" width="2004" height="3420" alt="" /><div class="field field-name-field-undergraduate-freshman field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Undergraduate - Freshman:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-undergraduate-transfer field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Undergraduate - Transfer:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-undergraduate-visitor field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Undergraduate - Visitor:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-undergraduate-gap-year field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Undergraduate - Gap Year:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-undergraduate-study-abroad field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Undergraduate - Study Abroad Partner:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-graduate-student field-type-list-boolean field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Graduate - Student:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><p>‘<em>Franchement</em>’, which means honestly or seriously.
